Poker Terms

There are a lot of poker terms that you’ll become familiar with once you start playing the game, but there are some poker terms that you should know before you sit down at PokerStars.de for the first time. It’s not necessary to know any of the poker terms, but it’s definitely a give away to experienced players when new players don’t even know the simplest of poker terms. The last thing you want is to be labeled a fish by the experienced players at the table so make sure you read some of the poker terms below and become more familiar with them before going to the casino next to play poker.

Act – Act means that it’s your turn to make your decision on whether to check, call, bet or raise

All In – When a player is all-in it means that everyone of there chips is committed into the current pot

Small Blind / Big Blind – The small blind and big blind are forced bets before every hand to ensure action

Bad Beat – A bad beat is when a player loses a hand when they we’re winning the hand at some point in time

Bankroll – Your bankroll is the amount of money you have available to play poker with

Bluff – A bluff is when you make a large bet or raise with a weak hand and everyone else folds

Board – The board are the five community cards every player can use in there hand

Broadway – Broadway is a term in poker used to describe an ace high straight (A-K-Q-J-10)

Button – The button is passed around the table clockwise to show who the dealer is for that hand

Buy-In – The buy-in is the minimum and maximum amount of chips you can bring to a given pocker table

Call – Call means that you would like to just call the bet, so if someone bets $10 you would call and owe $10

Raise – Raise means you want to increase the bet, so if a player bets $10 you’d need to raise to $20 or more

Fold – Fold means that you would like to fold the hand and throw your cards into the muck

Muck – Mean means either to fold your hand or the discard pile of folded cards and burned cards

Chase – When you chase a hand you’re staying in a hand in hopes of hitting your hand so that you win

Chop – A chop occurs when the big blind and small blind agree to take there blinds back if everyone else folds

Flop – The flop is the first three community cards in every hand

Turn – The turn is the fourth community card in every hand

River – The river is the fifth and last community card in every hand

There are plenty of other poker terms on PokerStars.it that you’ll become accustomed to as you start playing the game, but it’s important you have some idea about the terms used in the game. It doesn’t take long to read through some poker terms on a weekend and it will help camouflage the fact that you’re a new player which is good so that you aren’t labelled as a new player or fish at the table.
